Introduction to RP
The Basics
Roleplaying is a means of creating stories and depth to the experience of enjoying the Warhammer setting. Essentially, it is live storytelling. Whilst you might be stumped at first, as you flesh out your character, you will find this grows easier with time as they will develop their own character, and their responses and behaviours will become more natural to predict and enact. Researching the lore of the race of the character you are playing definitely is a must, and creating a profile that fits around this also is an essential tool.
Remember, your character is not a major named character within the setting. Imagine them as one of the background characters you see in a blur in a game intro. They may be a warrior, a simple merchant, or a minor noble. They won't be immortal, related to a major character, or a secret lovechild of Karl Franz and Morathi. If your character is trite and over the top, you will soon find people won't enjoy interacting with you, as the verisimilitude just won't be there. Keep things simple, and your character will become natural and believable. It is the stories you experience following their creation that give them life and meaning.
Whilst it is not essential to be a roleplayer in Return of Reckoning, many of us are, and within game we encourage our guild members to participate as it is a lot of fun. Roleplaying enables greater immersion in the Warhammer setting, and the ability to bring your characters to life by writing their behaviours and dialogue in any given situation.
We use OOC to describe being Out of Character, i.e. ourselves, the people behind the computers and talking about RL stuff.
We use IC to describe being In Character, i.e. the words and behaviour of our characters.
Roleplaying in Game
In game, we use /say to talk IC. So what you see in that channel is what your character is saying.
Party chat or tells are used for any OOC business.
We use emotes to describe the actions and emotions of our characters; descriptive narrative. You can do this by typing /e then your text. For example, "/e laughs at her enemy’s demise" would appear in game text as "(Your Character Name) laughs at her enemy’s demise".
Roleplaying in the Forums
These forums enable us to interact with each other in ways that we cannot do so in game.
Within the forums you will have the opportunity to create groups; either organised or more freeform story writing between you and other roleplayers, where you would take turns to build a dialogue and story.
In here you can enjoy scenes between Destro and Order races, or those races that do not appear in RoR, such as Vampire Counts, Skaven, Bretonnians, or even Lizardmen! The only thing holding you back is your imagination (whilst of course, adhering to and respecting the lore).
With structured written roleplaying threads, you will have the opportunity to join a group - usually of around 4 or 5 other roleplayers, which is controlled by a GM (Games Master). You will be guided through character creation, including creating a Character Sheet. With this, you will have a certain amount of points in certain abilities to spend when you start off.
Some classes you play will be naturally more proficient in certain skills and/or powers, so your base statistics will reflect this - for example, a High Elf Mage will have more Intelligence and some starter spells at their disposal, whereby a Marauder will have more Toughness and Strength. This will all be explained in more depth by your GM in the relevant forums.
Other opportunities for roleplaying exist, including Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WHFRP). You can organise your own groups and run events in Discord. A server is Provided.
Quality of Writing
Some scenes will only require a very short amount of text, for example if you are working through a conversation. As such, there is no minimum limit of words that we expect to see from you in the written RP forums.
The official language of the Forums is English, and we expect you to be fairly proficient so that people can comprehend you. Remember, tools like Google Translate are helpful, as is writing up a draft in Word before you post, and running it through spellcheck. If you make a mistake, don't worry - you can always edit your post after it has been created. Don't back peddle though or revisit posts that are a few hours old, as it may interrupt the flow and confuse those that you are roleplaying with. If you need to clarify anything or ask any questions, you are expected to place these in an OOC Thread that bolts on to your RP Thread.
Roleplaying and OOC Behaviour
Do not use RP as an excuse to be an arsehole to fellow players. Remember, IC and OOC are two separate things. You and your characters are separate things. When you start projecting in your roleplaying, you’ll start having problems. We will not tolerate people being jerks to anyone under the pretence of roleplay.
If you are considering exploring disturbing themes, you must talk about what you’re considering with the players you are thinking of involving before starting your RP, so that all understand what’s coming and consent to it. Do not put them in situations that they will feel uncomfortable or upset.
How shocking is too shocking? Scenes of torture and murder, and romantic scenes with the movie rating of 12 are permitted pretty much in public channels. If you post anything extreme, you can be reported and earn yourself a ban. If you and a trusted writing partner want to enact anything steamy, keep it in private chat and make sure that everyone involved understands boundaries. If you find that you are in a situation that makes you uncomfortable, report it to a Moderator with screenshots and we will deal with the matter seriously. We have Terms of Use for this forum and anyone seen to be taking things too far will be smited.
Remember, it’s rare that you know who is on the other side of that computer screen. They may not be who they say they are, so always be careful to keep yourself safe.
